The Americans with Disabilities Act, which set the guidelines for minimum public accessibility for people with disabilities and established the precedent that no employee should be discriminated against because of their disability.
The Architectural Barriers Act, which mandated that any building built with Federal funds must be built and or altered to be accessible to wheelchair users.
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which was established to extend Federal funding for affirmative action programs and vocational services. It also created special programs for federal research and training with respect to those with disabilities and extended the responsibilities of some departments such as the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
White Cane Safety Day, which was established on October 15th to nationally celebrate the contributions from visually impaired Americans and to acknowledge them as “valued members of our diverse country.”
The Social Security Act, which established monthly payments for people who are unable to work due to disability or retirement.
The Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act, which requires voting registration facilities and polling locations to be completely accessible so that everyone has the same opportunities to vote.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which was created to give all children the same opportunities in public education. It requires that the needs of children with disabilities be met, such as specialized education programs, non-restrictive environments, appropriate evaluations, and aids when needed.
