Dust Off Your Crown

Many non-profits across the country have gotten really creative during the COVID-19 outbreak. This is especially true of non-profits who serve those with disabilities. This August, the Ms. Wheelchair America Inc. was to hold their 49th annual Ms. Wheelchair America Competition in Little Rock, AR. With this year’s competition cancelled, the organization needed a way to continue their mission of advocacy.

On July 26th, the 50th anniversary of the organization and the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Ms Wheelchair America will launch “Dust Off Your Crown”. Led by last year’s winner, Hilary Muehlberger, every previous winner from across the country will break out their crowns, make appearances and advocate in their state and communities. In planning the event Hilary stated, “I was thinking about ways that we could get more people involved and since the 50th anniversary is coming up, I thought it would be really cool to get as many former titleholders as we could to get involved again.”

Over the years, Ms Wheelchair winners have educated and advocated on a variety of topics, “Stand for life”, “Where there is a wheel, there is a way” and “PRIDE – Parental rights included disability equality.” Ms Wheelchair winners not only believe in advocacy – they live it, proven by last year’s winner Hilary, who leads by example. She advocated for “Achieving independence through adaptive sports” and during her reign she participated in the US Open tennis tournament in St Louis, Missouri, in 100 degree heat and won two bronze medals.

We look forward to the launch of “Dust off Your Crown” to see how the organization will continue on their mission to provide an opportunity of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to successfully educate and advocate for the more than 61 million Americans living with disabilities.

Please join Ms. Wheelchair America, Hilary Muehlberger, on August 6,2020 to hear more about the Ms. Wheelchair America Competition and the Dust off your Crown initiative.
