Accessible Vehicle Allows Veteran to ‘Be There’ for His Family

After sustaining an injury while serving in Iraq, Randolph Stone was determined to maintain as much independence as he could back at home. For him, this meant figuring out a new way to drive. His resolve led him to learn how to drive with hand controls, opening a world of opportunity for adventure not only for himself but for his family as well.

“I still wanted to be able to drive, be independent,” he said. “I got trained on how to drive with hand controls, came down and checked out a vehicle, and I’ve been coming here for about the last ten years now.”

Stone has driven a variety of converted vehicles over the years, from minivans to his new Chevrolet Traverse. He uses a larger power wheelchair and has children who are getting older, so cabin space plays a big part in choosing a vehicle that’s right for himself and his family. On a personal style note, Stone also prefers trucks and SUVs, so when the Traverse came out the decision was a no-brainer.

“I wanted to get away from the minivan look,” he said. “It’s a little sportier and roomier, definitely roomier. Overall, it just has a nice look and feel for me.”

The ability to drive his own vehicle allows Stone to take his kids on adventures and vacations that they’ll always remember. Their accessible vehicle recently made the trip from Virginia down to Disney World in Florida.

“I don’t have to depend on somebody else to take me places. I ride up to the wheel easily and go where I want to go, when I want to go, and I don’t have any issues,” he said.
