Shauna Rae: The Early Years
Shauna Rae, a star on TLC’s hit show “I am Shauna Rae,” has faced numerous challenges throughout her life. At just 6 months old, she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor that required surgery and years of chemotherapy. While treatments were successful, doctors discovered that young Shauna’s pituitary gland (which is responsible for producing hormones in the body that control metabolism and growth) had been rendered dormant. By the age of 16, her bones permanently fused, leaving her just shy of 4 feet tall.
Shauna Rae Today
Like most young adults, Shauna – now 23 years old – craved the freedom and independence that driving provides. While her unique physical challenges made it difficult for her to operate a vehicle safely, Shauna was determined to learn how. After teaming up with a local Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) for evaluation and training, she was certified to drive and passed her driving test.
After being certified, Shawna worked with the MobilityWorks team to upfit her vehicle with the prescribed equipment. We installed hand controls which allowed Shauna to operate both the brake and gas pedals using levers. After fitting her for the seat and making a few minor adjustments to her hand controls, it was time for the test drive. Shauna quickly proved herself to be a natural behind the wheel and drove with confidence and ease.
A Surprising Interruption
During the test drive, something unexpected happened. A motorist flagged the vehicle down, not to complain about Shauna’s driving, but to express their admiration for her and her show. Shauna’s courage and determination have inspired many, and her ability to overcome obstacles and pursue her dreams serves as a powerful example to others facing similar challenges.
At MobilityWorks, we’re proud to have played a part in helping Shauna achieve her goal of driving independently. Our team of experts is committed to meeting the unique needs of each client we work with. Shauna Rae’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and resources, everyone can achieve their goals and pursue their dreams.
