Spend five minutes with David Williams and you can tell that he has a passion for serving veterans. It really is no surprise since he is one himself. David Williams has been a Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for the past nine years. The mission of the DAV is dedicated to one single purpose: empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. They accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America’s injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.
David’s work as a Service Officer is 100% voluntary and he does it because of his experience with the Veteran’s Administration. David served in the Air Force from 1977 to 1982. When he left the military, David tried to access services for himself, but became frustrated with the process. After 31 years as a federal investigator, he returned with a better understanding of how things work and wanted to do the most he could to assist veterans in accessing their benefits.
When David meets with a veteran for the first time, he talks to them about their military service and then implements a plan to get them their benefits. David is an expert at paperwork and the inner workings of the VA system. He works closely with organizations like MobilityWorks to help ensure the veterans receive their benefits. For years, David has worked closely with Paul Tumelaire, CMC at our Richmond location and says, “Paul is probably one of the greatest uncertified veterans’ services officer in all of Richmond Virginia,” “He’s a hand’s on guy, and that’s that relationship that I have had over the last 10 years.”
At MobilityWorks, we are privileged to work with Service Officers at the DAV like David Williams, who are empowering our veterans. “When you are a veteran you care about veterans, and you care about the needs and services in assisting veterans” stated David, “you just do what you do…I enjoy what I do.” Please join us for Coffee with Craig on July 23, 2020 to learn more about the DAV and David’s passion for helping fellow veterans.
