Twenty years ago, an entrepreneurial CPA with a background in healthcare and a passion for cars purchased a small company called New Era Transportation (now MobilityWorks®). With only one location in Akron, Ohio, New Era Transportation modified vehicles for transporting elderly and people in wheelchairs. Their largest customer was America’s Body Company. When America’s Body Company was sold, Bill Koeblitz jumped at the chance to capture their greatest asset, Taylor Clark, the Director of Sales and Marketing, who built his career in the Detroit automotive industry.
In 1997, the industry of vehicle modifiers and equipment was very fragmented and the majority of business came from the commercial sector. There weren’t any quality oversight or dealer qualifications required to service or sell accessible vehicles. A lot of vehicle modifiers were inexperienced garage shops that made custom vehicles with hopes that each customized van would work for their client. The door height and interior space of minivans in 1997 weren’t able to accommodate a wheelchair so the majority of accessible vehicles were large retrofitted vans.
Fast forward to 2017, and you’ll find a very different industry. The inexperienced garage shops are gone. They’ve been replaced with manufacturers like BraunAbility® and VMI® who build accessible minivans that are crash tested with lowered floors, in-floor ramps, and kneeling systems, and are now known for their safety and performance. There are now industry standards like the NMEDA QAP (Quality Assurance Program) certification process, that meet and exceed all federal and industry safety regulations to provide customers with safe and reliable adaptive transportation. Today, customers have the ability to go to a MobilityWorks location for a needs analysis, and then test drive an assortment of vehicles that will meet their needs prior to purchasing. MobilityWorks has evolved with the industry. Our one location has expanded to more than 67 and will continue to grow. We now have well over 1200 accessible vehicles with varying price points and features to fit the needs of our customers nationwide. What hasn’t changed since 1997 is the passion that Bill and Taylor share. Whether it be for their customers or employees, Bill and Taylor are dedicated to creating a 100-year-old company based on their passion for servicing others so that they can “be there”.
This year’s InMotion is a tribute to organizations and people like Bill and Taylor who in the last 20 years have let passion drive them in connecting with what matters most.
After watching children at a hotel pool hesitant to play with his special-needs daughter, Morgan, Gordon Hartman had a vision of turning an abandoned quarry in Northeast San Antonio, TX into an accessible theme park. Gordon and his wife Maggie started working on plans for Morgan’s Wonderland, the first theme park designed with special needs individuals in mind. Open since 2010, Morgan’s Wonderland has now had more than a million visitors from all 50 states and 66 other countries. The park brings together those with and without disabilities for fun and a better understanding of one another. Now in 2017, the Hartmans are excited to be finishing construction on their latest expansion, Morgan’s Inspiration Island, the world’s first ultra-accessible splash park for guests of all ages to get wet and have fun together.
The splash park will overlook an 8-acre lake and feature six major tropically themed elements. The River Boat Adventure ride at Morgan’s Inspiration Island will twist and turn more than an eighth of a mile through a jungle setting with bird and animal sounds in the background. Five water play areas will offer a variety of splashy elements such as raintrees, falls, geysers, jets, water cannons and tipping buckets.
Guests of the park will have access to new wheelchairs that are completely waterproof and compressed-air powered. The PneuChair was designed by the University of Pittsburgh’s Human Engineering Research Laboratories. It only weighs about 80 pounds and can be fully charged in just 10 minutes.
Just like Morgan’s Wonderland, every element will be wheelchair-accessible, and waterproof wristbands with RFID technology will be available. Another wonderful aspect of Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island is that admission for anyone with special needs is always free. Throughout the summer the parks will have several special events including a giant 4th of July celebration.
An official opening date for Morgan’s Inspiration Island presented by Toyota will be coming soon. Check out their website www.MorgansWonderland.com for up to date news.

Pre-scheduled Saturday appointments and at-home demonstrations are also an option.
Now that spring is here, most of the MobilityWorks locations have recently adjusted their schedules to include or extend Saturday showroom hours. Clients wanting to stop in and look at wheelchair accessible vans for sale, or to schedule a free needs analysis with a Certified Mobility Consultant, are encouraged to view the individual hours of each location on our website. Most of the stores are open on Saturday’s starting at 9 AM in the morning.
Below are a few commonly asked questions about Saturday hours and scheduling an appointment at one of our stores. Please let us know if you have other questions!
The location near me has Saturday hours posted on the website. Do I need to call ahead?
We encourage all people to call ahead or to schedule an appointment – just in case there are other pre-scheduled clients being helped that day. We don’t want someone waiting for an extended period of time if it can be avoided. Call us at 1-877-275-4907. A Client Care Center representative will verify the availability of a consultant for when you plan to arrive.
What if the location near me doesn’t have Saturday hours?
Our staff will make special arrangements when necessary to meet on a Saturday. However, an appointment must be pre-scheduled in advance. Just contact our Client Care Center at 1-877-275-4907 and tell them when you can come in for a visit. Our Client Care Center representatives are also available to help with any phone or chat questions during Saturday and Sunday hours.
Can I bring additional family members or friends to the appointment?
Absolutely! We will be happy to demonstrate the different types of conversion vans and ramp options to everyone that you bring along.
What if I don’t have accessible transportation to get to a MobilityWorks location?
If you are unable to get to a MobilityWorks location and want to meet with a Certified Mobility Consultant about a specific van or type of conversion, we will make arrangements in many cases to bring a van to your home. A consultant may also want to pick you up in one of our vans and bring you to the showroom, depending on how far you live from the store and what options you are interested in seeing – such as transfer seats and hand controls.
Note: depending on travel distance and availability, some home visit restrictions may apply. We will try to accommodate as many requests as possible. Contact the store for details.
My spouse that is in a wheelchair can’t attend the appointment. Should I still come in?
Ideally we’d like to have the person in the wheelchair there with you for a complete needs analysis, but we also understand that situations can arise. If the person in the wheelchair isn’t going to be attending, try to provide us with the make and model of the wheelchair so that we can get accurate measurements*. If you have a backup or transport chair and can bring the one to be used in the wheelchair van that would also be helpful.
We will eventually want to meet with everyone involved in the vehicle purchase to make sure you are getting the right conversion and required equipment.
I don’t currently own an accessible van. Do you take trade-ins on non-accessible vehicles like my car or truck?
MobilityWorks will take any type of standard vehicle on trade, so long as we can take it for a test drive and have it inspected by one of our technicians. You will also want to make sure that you have the title. We will offer you a fair free trade-in evaluation that can then be used as a down payment if necessary.
