September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

Every September, we recognize Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month as a time to raise awareness, share resources and support those living with spinal cord injuries.

At MobilityWorks, we meet and work alongside many people whose lives have been impacted by an SCI. Their strength inspires us every day and reminds us why accessibility is so important.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury happens when the spinal cord is damaged, interrupting the signals between the brain and body. This can cause a loss of movement and feeling below the point of injury, sometimes partial and sometimes complete.

  • Causes: Vehicle crashes, falls and sports injuries are among the most common causes.
  • Prevalence: Nearly 300,000 people in the United States are living with an SCI, with around 18,000 new cases each year, according to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
  • Impact: Beyond mobility, SCI can affect breathing, temperature regulation, and more, making adaptive solutions and support systems vital.

Supporting Independence Through Mobility

Our mission is to empower everyone to connect with who and what matters most. For many living with an SCI, accessible transportation is a huge part of maintaining independence and quality of life.

Through wheelchair accessible vehicles, adaptive driving equipment and personalized mobility solutions, we’re proud to partner with individuals and families to find transportation that fits their unique needs.

How You Can Get Involved

SCI Awareness Month is about amplifying voices and strengthening communities. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

  • Learn and share: Spread awareness about SCI and the importance of accessibility.
  • Support organizations: Groups such as the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and the United Spinal Association provide valuable resources, advocacy, and funding for research.
  • Advocate for inclusion: Encourage accessibility in your local community and beyond.
  • Uplift stories: Celebrate the resilience and accomplishments of individuals living with SCI.

Moving Forward Together

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month is an important reminder of the need for greater accessibility and understanding. At MobilityWorks, we’re honored to support individuals with SCI by helping them stay connected to the people and places they love.
