Many people do a significant amount of shopping around the holidays for gifts, get-togethers, or for travelling. With Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Green Monday, and plenty of other occasions to shop, it can be difficult to keep track of what you need and when to get it. It can also be somewhat dangerous, as you become increasingly susceptible to identity theft and hackers the more you shop online. Here are some tips that can make your time of shopping safer and easier.

  1. Check for Secure Sites
There are a few ways to ensure you are shopping on a secure site. Make sure that you see the lock symbol in the address bar, without a yellow caution symbol or red strikethrough. Also check that the address starts with https- the “s” stands for secure and will ensure safe communications.
  2. Install Security Software
Before you even begin shopping, make sure to have some sort of malware, spyware, and antivirus protection installed to keep your computer or cell phone safe from potential threats.
  3. Use Trusted Networks and Personal Devices
If you can’t shop at home, make sure the network you’re on is familiar and trusted. If you’re traveling, try to find places you’ve connected to before, such as a Starbucks or McDonalds. The less places you have to sign up to for Wi-Fi, the fewer places your information may be, which is generally safer. Also consider using a VPN, a Virtual Private Network, which is a way to encrypt any data travelling from or to your laptop or phone.
  4. Use a Credit Card or Virtual Credit Card
Credit cards provide an extra layer of protection compared to their debit card counterparts. Most banks can much more easily dispute and cancel any unauthorized purchases from a credit card. Many banks also offer virtual credit cards, which offer a card number for one-time use so online purchases do not put your actual card at risk. Certain credit cards will also offer helpful bonuses for free, such as extended warranties on electronic purchases.
  5. Check the Price Matching Policy
Many stores will price match some or all other retailers, or will match prices from their online stores. There are often different prices, even within the same retailer, between their online and in-store prices that are listed.
  6. Check for Extra Opportunities to Save
Many retailers offer additional incentives to purchase through them, or to purchase at a certain time. For example, Kohl’s offers “Kohl’s Cash” which can be used for future purchases, but the amount you receive can vary depending on when your purchases are made.
  7. Check with the Better Business Bureau
If you have never heard of a certain website, never shopped there before, or see suspiciously good deals, there is reason to be hesitant of shopping there. To be sure they are a reputable retailer, check online with the Better Business Bureau.
  8. Download Browser Extensions
Browser extensions are small pieces of software that allow you to customize and modify your browser for your particular needs. There are dozens of browser extensions that can automatically look for certain things wherever you are shopping. Some can test available coupon codes, others will check the prices at other retailers, or check price changes through the last few weeks. Others will automatically give you cashback just for shopping online! Go to your preferred browser and search for safe and reliable extensions that can assist you.
  9. Review all Purchasing and Shipping Policies
Be aware of any stipulations that will come with your purchases. If you’re taking advantage of standard shipping, double check when the ship by date is, so that you will have it in time to give as a gift. If you’re unsure about a purchase, make sure there are no restocking fees or exceptions that would not allow you to return or exchange your purchase.
  10. Save all Receipts
Whether you’re shopping in store or online, make sure to save all receipts or other communications regarding your order. If something is late or incorrect, it will help to have proof on-hand of what the order should be.
  11. Download Store Apps
Most stores now have an app that can allow for easy on-the-go browsing, to make sure you’re able to snag a deal before it’s gone. If you’re worried about missing a deal or forgetting about a sale, turn on their notifications to automatically be reminded. Often times there are also exclusive in-app discounts or coupons that can save you even more!

Though it can be overwhelming when trying to get everything ready for the holidays, there are little things that can help. Remember to keep your information protected and have fun shopping online!
