Prom Night Reservations Being Made Now for February 10, 2017 in All 50 States.
Between professional baseball tryouts, broadcasting and his foundation it’s a wonder how Tim Tebow finds time to sleep! The former Florida Gator quarterback is changing lives around the globe and in a few weeks his foundation will host one of their largest events to date. The “Night to Shine Prom” will take place at hundreds of churches in all 50 states simultaneously on February 10, 2017. Night to Shine was started two years ago as a magical evening for anyone over 14 years old with special needs.
Every guest who attends the “Night to Shine Prom” enters on a red carpet surrounded by fans and paparazzi. Once inside guests receive the royal treatment including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining, complimentary flowers, a catered dinner and of course a dance floor. When the night is over, all of the attendees will depart with prom party favors and a crown or tiara, as everyone in attendance is crowned either a king or queen.
As sponsor of Night to Shine, the Tim Tebow Foundation will provide each host church with an official planning manual, prom kit complete with decorations and gifts, as well as guidance and support. The foundation is also providing financial support to hundreds of churches needing assistance in hosting the event.
The Tim Tebow Foundation is also impacting lives around the world through their adoption programs and medical facilities. Two other popular initiatives are the “Team Tebow” outreach which has over 20,000 children committed to serving others within their community, and the “W15H” foundation for children with life threatening illnesses.
Over the past few weeks our general manager Dean Pells and his team in Albany have been very busy! Earlier this month they hosted a group of almost 40 students from Sage College who are studying Occupational Therapy for a training session. They also attended and sponsored a dinner recognizing the best personal assistants in the Albany area.
Sage College has been visiting MobilityWorks for nearly 20 years. These future Occupational Therapists get a chance to see first hand how the equipment and vehicles can change the lives of people with mobility challenges. They also get to hear from local Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists, many of whom are occupational therapists themselves. Bill LaChapelle, one of MobilityWorks most experienced Certified Mobility Consultants, led the class that these students actually earned credits for. Bill showed them everything from lowered floor accessible minivans to to wheelchair securement. There was also a heavy focus on funding requirements and how Medicaid and 3rd party funding works.
A few evenings later Dean Pells and Ron Wilson attended the Consumer Directed Choices banquet dinner. Their organization assists hundreds of families and individuals in the Albany area and surrounding counties. The non profit organization helps their clients with anything regarding medical and personal care. Ron’s wife Margie works for the CDC and enjoys getting to help those in need of a little help and support.
Dean was very excited to help support a great cause and states, “We have become greatly involved, because of our connection with many mutual clients of both the CDC and MobilityWorks. As such, we wanted to support an organization that greatly helps our community which we know and love.”
In just a few weeks the team will be back at it again with an exhibit at the Albany Auto Show!
Last week Eliza McIntosh was officially crowned as Ms. Wheelchair America for 2017. The pageant was founded in 1972 by a Columbus, OH physician Dr. Philip K. Wood. He created the non-profit organization to help promote the achievements of the wheelchair community and to help make America more accessible. Today the pageant is headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI and typically has competitors from about 30 states.
The pageant lasts six days and during that time contestants attend workshops, are each personally interviewed, and get to participate in fun evening activities. The pageant is designed to promote the building of friendships and bonds while allowing the judges to observe the contestants. On Friday night all of the girls gave their speeches then on Saturday, Eliza was crowned champion! The main message of her speech was “Where There’s a Wheel, There’s a Way”.
Eliza McIntosh was born with spinal dysgenesis and doctors told her family that her entire life would be spent on bed rest. They were mistaken and from a young age Eliza participated in adaptive sports. She credits her “Junior Jazz” wheelchair basketball coach as a huge part of her success and even went on to become an alternate for the US Paralympic basketball team. Another interesting fact is that she owns the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous wheelie in a wheelchair that lasted 3 hours and 51 minutes!
Today Eliza is Political Science Major at the University of Utah, where she is extremely engaged in state and local politics. This past April she was a GOP delegate at Utah’s state convention, where a bit of controversy was sparked. The Utah state chairman called for a “standing vote” which left McIntosh and several other delegates furious and offended. She responded by staging a protest in Salt Lake City which gained national media attention.
When Eliza officially takes on the title of Ms. Wheelchair America in 2017 she will be very busy. Her duties will include traveling across America to speak on behalf of the organization as well as the entire wheelchair community. She will also be actively participating in fundraising events and writing a monthly newsletter.
Congratulations to all of the pageant contestants, and thank you for being an active voice for the wheelchair community!
