Summer Maintenance Tips for Your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

A mechanic uses a diagnostic tool to inspect a blue minivan with its hood open inside an auto repair shop.

As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, summer is the perfect season to get out and explore in your wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV). But just like any vehicle, your WAV needs a little extra care to perform at its best in the heat. Whether you’re headed to a beachside getaway or cruising around town, these simple summer maintenance tips can help keep your vehicle running smoothly and safely all season long.

1. Keep an Eye on Tire Pressure

Heat causes air to expand, and that can impact your tire pressure. Overinflated tires can reduce traction, while underinflated ones can cause poor fuel economy and increase the risk of a blowout. Check your tire pressure at least once a month—and don’t forget the spare!

2. Inspect the Ramp or Lift System

Your ramp or lift is vital to the functionality of your WAV. Summer dust, sand and debris can build up in the mechanisms. Clean the ramp or lift system regularly, check for unusual noises or slow operation, and have it professionally serviced if anything seems off. Our MobilityWorks service team is happy to help if you need support!

3. Check the Air Conditioning

Staying cool in the summer heat isn’t just about comfort, it’s also a health consideration for many. Make sure your AC system is blowing cold air and listen for unusual sounds that might indicate a problem. If the airflow isn’t as strong as it used to be, it might be time to replace your cabin air filter.

4. Monitor Fluid Levels

Your WAV works harder in the summer, especially if you’re traveling with extra passengers or cargo. Check essential fluids, such as engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and coolant. These fluids keep your engine from overheating and your vehicle running efficiently.

5. Give Your Battery a Quick Check

High temperatures can shorten battery life. Have your battery tested if it’s more than a few years old, and check for corrosion or loose connections. If your battery is slow to start or showing signs of strain, it might be time for a replacement.

6. Clean and Protect Interior Surfaces

The sun’s UV rays can fade and crack your dashboard and seats over time. Use sunshades, window tints, or UV protectant sprays to shield your interior. For leather or vinyl seating, especially in modified vehicles, be sure to condition them regularly to prevent drying out.

7. Plan for a Professional Inspection

Before hitting the road for a long summer trip, it’s a smart idea to schedule a service appointment, especially if it’s been a while since your last checkup. At MobilityWorks, our certified technicians know the ins and outs of adaptive vehicles and can help you make sure everything is in working order.
