MobilityWorks Helps Georgia Firefighter Regain Independence

A spark of generosity has ignited a brighter future for David McBrayer, a DeKalb County firefighter whose life was forever changed after a car accident in 2023. Through the kindness of an anonymous donor, plus the support of the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation and our Atlanta MobilityWorks team, David is now embracing a new chapter in his mobility journey.

David received an accessible Toyota Sienna outfitted with adaptive driving equipment to meet his unique needs. This gift not only empowers him to handle daily tasks, like grocery shopping, but also opens the door for him to continue his career aspirations. As local resident Ronnie Mayer shared with Fox 5 Atlanta, “He’ll be self-sufficient. He can drive to the grocery store. He doesn’t have to depend on his mom and dad – he still can – but he doesn’t have to. If he wants to go back to work and retire as a DeKalb County firefighter, he can go to school, teach classes, and do whatever as a DeKalb County firefighter.”

This generous act of kindness didn’t stop with the van. The anonymous donor also gave $25,000 to the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, a nonprofit organization that partners with the fire service community to provide fire safety and prevention education, support medical facilities and assist burn survivors in their recovery.

Stories like David’s remind us of the power of community and the importance of supporting one another. At MobilityWorks, our mission is to provide wheelchair users with the mobility, freedom and personal freedom they desire. Seeing David’s journey toward independence inspires us to continue providing accessible solutions that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
