In Honor of Neeru Sharma

Neeru Sharma, a General Motors employee in the Detroit area and a long-time customer of our Madison Heights location, died suddenly in January 2010 after suffering a massive heart attack.

Neeru was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, which causes fragile bones. She was only a few feet tall and used a power wheelchair for mobility. With the help of hand controls, she was able to drive an adaptive minivan. She was a well-known disabilities blogger for the Detroit News and a guest writer in a recent In-Motion Newsletter. In one of our more popular You Tube videos, Neeru demonstrated her use of special steering devices, custom seating and her MobilityWorks wheelchair van. She ended her video demonstration with "now let's go shopping!" – a favorite pastime.

"She tried to get information about disability awareness out," said Naveen Sharma, Neeru's sister. "She was a very independent person. She went to Europe, Denmark ... she traveled like crazy. She had millions of friends."

Our condolences go to out to Neeru's family and friends. She will be missed by everyone who was touched by her incredible zest for life despite her disability.

The following You Tube video features Ricky James, an inspiring young man who was paralyzed in a Motocross racing accident in 2005. At the time of the accident he had just turned 16 years old. Ricky's dad and David Bailey, a friend of the James family, share Ricky's courageous story - and how he went on to compete in the Ironman Triathlon. These next two videos feature the TMN Robot. With the push of a button, the TMN Robot automatically deploys from the trunk of a standard automobile or SUV to deliver the wheelchair to the driver. It then retreats back to the trunk with the push of a button. The Robot was designed by T.M.N Devices Ltd, an Israeli engineering firm that has been providing solutions for handicapped drivers for over 10 years.
