HAND CONTROLS and HANDICAPPED DRIVING AIDS

With use of hand controls and electronic driving aids, many people can assume the responsibility of driving for themselves again. MobilityWorks offers a wide selection of adaptive equipment for vehicles, so handicapped people can have the independence of being in control of their own transportation. All of the equipment we offer is manufactured by some of the most trusted names in the industry, so you can be confident in the quality of your driving controls.

The trained staff at MobilityWorks will work closely with you to custom fit your wheelchair van with the adaptive equipment that meets your specific needs and physical requirements. We offer a range of driving aids such as hand controls, pedal extensions, brake pedal guards, steering knobs, and high-tech electronic steering options.

The use of wheelchair van hand controls requires the driver to take and pass a special training class which educates on the nuances of driving with the controls. MobilityWorks consultants can put you in contact with a local driver evaluator or rehabilitation center that can help to arrange for your special training class.

We carry adaptive equipment made by these and other leading manufacturers:

Drive Master
  Drive Master Steering Knob

Drive Master products are used to customize MobilityWorks vehicles for a range of mobility needs. Customizations such as low-effort steering, low effort brakes, foot pedal extensions, steering knobs, steering cuffs, and many more are made possible by the product configurations offered by Drive Master. A Steering Knob is featured here which provides positive one-hand control of the steering wheel. Note: MobilityWorks no longer installs left foot gas pedals.

Wells Engberg
  Wells Engberg

The Wells-Engberg Company has over 40 years of experience manufacturing hand operated mechanical driving controls. One product frequently used by MobilityWorks customers’ is the CT-100. The CT-100 offers mechanical control of the vehicle with a flexible accelerator cable going directly to the accelerator pedal assembly. Just twist the handle (same as motorcycle grip) to accelerate. The cable design allows a reduction in the amount of hardware in driver's area giving the driver more leg room.

EMC – Electronic Mobility Controls
  Mobility Products and Design

One option available for some drivers is to install electronically assisted hand controls. This technology was originally modeled after technology used in the aerospace industry. First installed and used in an automobile in 1990, it has revolutionized how people in wheelchairs approach driving. EMC offers two types of controls. Primary Controls manage gas, brakes, and steering while the Secondary Driving Controls manufactured by EMC are designed to operate vehicle functions other than Gas, Brake & Steering. EMC offers a variety of options for many different vehicle applications, and each EMC secondary control comes with a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty.
